SSC - Building Environmental Campus Community (BECC) Fellowships

Each semester, the Sierra Student Coalition supports talented student organizers in our Building Environmental Campus Community (BECC) Fellowship program. BECC organizers work with an environmental group to conduct a hard-hitting campaign for clean energy on campus. BECC Fellows attend an advanced grassroots organizing training (with travel and tuition expenses paid) that provides the skills to win victories on campus.

Fellowships are intended for the leader of student groups who are currently enrolled in college. Selected Fellows receive $1,500 scholarships, additional funding for campaign materials, and work with SSC staff throughout the semester.

Drum Major Institute Scholars
The Drum Major Institute for Public Policy (DMI) has launched DMI Scholars to identify progressive college students from diverse communities and train them in the skills necessary to obtain and succeed in entry-level public policy positions. DMI Scholars is a "Public Policy 101" for young people who want to shape the direction of our country. Scholars will learn to approach problems through a policy lens and meet professionals doing this work for government, think tanks, campaigns and advocacy organizations. DMI Scholars are committed to advocating for fairness and equity and have strong communication skills.
Available to: Sophomores and Juniors in college, at least 18 years old
Award: DMI Scholars Summer Institute in New York City. In addition, DMI will work with students to seek out ongoing opportunities for internships, jobs and networking opportunities.

Young People For
Young People For is a national, youth-driven initiative that aims to equip young people with the skills and resources necessary to bring about positive progressive change on their campuses and in their communities. Fellows of YPF will attend the annual National Summit for Young Progressive Leaders. At the Summit, Fellows will meet other young progressive leaders from across the county and be trained by experts about ways to create positive social change.
Throughout the fellowship, students are offered financial support, technical support and media assistance while implementing self designed "Blueprints for Social Justice." In addition to support for their blueprints, Fellows also receive help with internship placements, job opportunities, travel opportunities, and networking opportunities that can add to their ability to make an impact as young leaders.
Award: All expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to attend Young People For's National Summit for Young Progressive Leaders, internship placements, networking opportunities.

Better World Books

Raise money for your organization by running a Better World Books book drive! Better World Books will pay your group for each qualifying book and will redistribute your books to non-profit literacy programs.

Campus Progress Action Grants
Campus Progress Action Grants help students leverage their passion, creativity, ideas, and organizing talents to create progressive change on their campuses and in their communities. Whether it's working to promote clean energy on your campus; to advocate for a living wage at your school or in your state; to stand up against extremist judges and abuse of power in Washington; to fight genocide in Sudan; etc., Campus Progress wants to assist the most creative and energetic issue campaigns across America.
Recipients of Campus Progress Action Grants not only will receive funding for education and advocacy campaigns; they also will receive communications and messaging strategy and support from Campus Progress / Center for American Progress staff and access to policy experts on their issue. We are looking to support students and campus organizations who can demonstrate commitment and achievement.

Do Something Grants for Young Social Entrepreneurs
Do Something works to inspire, support, and celebrate young social entrepreneurs and community activists. Do Something and GameStop are offering grants to young people who have a great idea for a community action project and need support to turn their idea into reality. Grants are also offered to social entrepreneurs who have already created a sustainable project, program, or organization and need funding to further the growth and success of their program.
Available to: US Citizens under the age of 25

Wild Gift Grants

The Wild Gift provides grants to leaders who wish to embark on a self-designed year long project to protect nature or promote sustainability. The Wild Gift program consists of four parts: mentoring to help refine leader-designed projects, a 20-day wilderness trek, a year's support to ensure the project's success, and a seven-day trek after one year to share project results and strategize for continued achievement.
Available to: Ages 21-30

Women for Sustainable Development Leadership Institute
NWF's Women for Sustainable Development (WSD) leadership institute is designed to offer career building skills and educational opportunities to participants, and the opportunity to use these skills to build awareness about international sustainable development issues on their campuses and in their communities.
Available to: Women enrolled in ungraduate schools in the US and Mexico
Award: Participants selected for WSD will attend a three-day leadership training where they will learn about current global environmental issues, receive training on skills such as grassroots organizing and media communications, as well as meet with professionals working in the sustainable development field.

David Brower Youth Awards
Each year the Earth Island Institute honors leaders of the student environmental movement with the Brower Youth Award. This national award recognizes 6 young people for their outstanding activism and achievements in the fields of environmental and social justice advocacy. Over the past six years, seven SSCers have won the Brower. Will you be the next to join this list?

Young Eco-Hero Awards
Action For Nature, a San Francisco based group, is seeking applications worldwide for its 2008 International Young Eco-Hero Awards Program. The award recognizes the individual accomplishments of young people who have carried out environmental action projects which concern environmental action, advocacy, environmental health, or protection of the natural world.

Gloria Barron Prize
The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes honors outstanding young leaders who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet. Morris K. Udall Scholarship
Each year, the Morris K. Udall Foundation awards eighty scholarships and fifty honorable mentions to college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue careers relating to the environment, or who intend to pursue careers in tribal public policy or Native American health care and are Native American or Alaska Native. Many SSCers have won this prestigious scholarship including former Executive Committee member Rachel Ackoff and National Director, Jared Duval and former National Director Camilla Feibelman!

President's Environmental Youth Awards

Sierra Student Coalition Internships
With over 12,000 high-school and college-age members and a presence on over 250 campuses across the country, the Sierra Student Coalition (SSC) is the largest student-run environmental advocacy organization in the US. As the student branch of the Sierra Club we work closely with many of the Club's staff teams in DC to advance our shared national priorities, especially a clean energy future that will stop global warming. We offer resources and support, including trainings and campaigns, to a national network of young environmental organizers to assist them in running strategic grassroots organizing efforts that influence environmental policy and alter public attitudes. To further support this work, the SSC sponsors internships. Our internships provide a hands-on opportunity for you to gain an in-depth understanding of the field of student environmental organizing and the specific role that the SSC plays in this field and the broader youth progressive movement.

Environmental Education Programs

E.E. Just Environmental Leadership Institute: Stewardship for Sustainability, Leadership for the Future

Kimball Union Academy offers week long professional development institutes for educators. Institutes focus on increasing both environmental content and proven pedagogical techniques for all educators who care about the environment and seek ways to engage their students in meaningful learning. Younger students spend two weeks in beautiful New Hampshire working as a team to come up with real solutions to the threat of global warming. This institute features field trips across New England, laboratory experiments, guest speakers, community projects and group problem-solving! Older students are encouraged to join us in Costa Rica for a three-week adventure, learning about environmental science and policy, biodiversity of tropical forests, community leadership, and immersion into Latin American culture!
